Maradona, who had previously scored the ‘Hand of God’ goal at around the 50 minute mark in the quarterfinals, would score the goal four minutes later.

Maradona receives a pass from Hector Enrique in Argentina’s own half and started to sprint towards England’s goal. He avoided four English players namely Peter Beardsley, Terry Butcher, Peter Reid and Terry Fenwick during his six minute run.

It is imperative to say that the run lasted only ten seconds and that he actually avoided Terry Butcher twice during the run.

He dribbled the ball past English goalkeeper Peter Shilton and finished the shot, raising Argentina’s score to two-nil at that stage.

Eventually, Argentina won the game with the score of two-one, and went on to win the World Cup finals that year.

This goal is also considered to be the greatest individual goal of all time.

Maradona also scored an equally good goal against Belgium in the semifinals of the tournament, which took the fourth place in the FIFA website Goal of the Century listing.

It is also to be noted that the Belgium goalkeeper, Jean Marie Pfaff, was one of the best goalkeepers during the 1980s.

Maradona had said during the post match interview that he had intended to pass the ball to Jorge Valdano. He said he was not able to do the same as he was soon crowded by four England players and instead tried netting the ball himself. He also praised the English team for being noble, since they did not try to knock him down during his run.
