Team India batsman Shreyas Iyer has made a successful comeback to the side after undergoing a five-month rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. This is great news for the Indian team, as Iyer’s return brings stability to the middle order, a position that has been a concern in his absence.
Iyer had injured his back during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in March, which put his participation in the 2023 ODI World Cup in doubt. However, after receiving treatment and support from the NCA staff, Iyer has regained full fitness and is now ready to take on the number 4 position in the ODI lineup for India.
Expressing his gratitude, Iyer posted a heartfelt message on social media, thanking Nitin Bhai, Rajini Sir, and everyone at the NCA for their tireless efforts in helping him recover. He acknowledges the long journey and appreciates the support he received.
Iyer’s return is crucial for the Indian team, as they look to strengthen their middle order alongside KL Rahul. In his previous performances at the number 4 position, Iyer has scored 805 runs in 20 innings, with an impressive average of 47.35 and a strike rate of 94.37. He has recorded two centuries and five half-centuries in that position, with his highest score being 113*.
Last year, Iyer emerged as the leading run-scorer for the Indian team across all formats. He amassed 1,609 international runs in 39 matches and 40 innings, with an average of 48.75. He scored one century and 14 half-centuries, including a best score of 113*. In Test matches, Iyer scored 422 runs in five matches, with an average of 60.28 and four half-centuries. His highest Test score was 92.
In ODIs, Iyer accumulated 724 runs in 17 matches, with an impressive average of 55.69. He scored one century and six half-centuries, with a best score of 113*. In T20Is, he scored 463 runs at an average of 35.61 and a strike rate of 141.15. He recorded four half-centuries in the shortest format, with a highest score of 74*.
Iyer’s form and experience will be crucial for India’s campaign in the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup, which will be co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The tournament, scheduled from August 30 to September 17, will serve as an important preparation for the World Cup in October. It will also help the selectors in making decisions for the marquee event.
