Sri Lanka Cricket Secretary Mohan de Silva has resigned following the national team’s disappointing performance in the ODI World Cup in India. Sri Lanka suffered a massive 302-run defeat to India in Mumbai, effectively eliminating them from the semifinal race.
The resignation of Mr. de Silva comes after the sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe called for the mass resignation of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) administration in response to the team’s heavy loss. In a statement, Mr. Ranasinghe blamed the selection committee and the SLC administration for the debacle.
The SLC administration, led by Shammi Silva, requested a probe report from the team management regarding the poor performance at Wankhede, where the team was dismissed for just 55 runs. Mr. Silva was elected uncontested as chair and is currently serving his third successive term at SLC, which expires in 2025.
Sri Lanka’s next match is against Bangladesh in Delhi on November 6. So far, they have only managed to secure two wins out of seven games in the tournament.
