Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan faced boos from fans as he left Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium after a training session during a break from the Cricket World Cup. Shakib had returned home to work with his mentor Nazmul Abedeen to address batting issues he was experiencing in the ongoing tournament in India.
Video footage showed a group of people jeering Shakib, who has only scored 56 runs in the four innings he has played in the World Cup so far. This includes a mere one run in the recent 149-run defeat against South Africa in Mumbai. Shakib had two sessions with Nazmul before rejoining the squad in Kolkata for Bangladesh’s next match against the Netherlands.
Reporter Maidul Islam, who witnessed the event, stated that some fans in Mirpur booed Shakib as he was getting into his car. This incident is unprecedented in Bangladesh, as such behavior towards a cricketer is unheard of.
Bangladesh has only won one out of their five matches in the World Cup. Following their defeat against South Africa, which marked their second biggest defeat in a World Cup match, they were at the bottom of the table. However, their position improved after Australia’s victory over the Netherlands and England’s loss to Sri Lanka in the subsequent matches.
In the previous World Cup in England in 2019, Shakib was in top form, scoring 606 runs and taking 11 wickets.
