Rohit Sharma Breaks Record for Most Sixes in ICC World Cup 2023: Shares Inspiration from Gayle

The India captain, Rohit Sharma, has broken Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes in international cricket. Rohit began his innings with 551 sixes, just two behind Gayle. He claimed the record in just 31 balls with a front-foot pull off Naveen-ul-Haq.

In an interview with bcci.tv after India’s eight-wicket win, Rohit mentioned that he drew inspiration from Gayle himself during his journey of hitting sixes. He praised Gayle as a six-hitting machine and stated that they both wear the same jersey number, 45. Rohit humorously added that he was sure Gayle would be happy about his record being broken by jersey number 45.

Gayle congratulated Rohit on Twitter, and Rohit replied in his own quirky manner, stating that while they wear numbers 4 and 5 on their backs, their favorite number is 6.

Rohit took 453 games to break the record, 30 fewer than Gayle, who achieved 553 sixes in 483 international matches. However, Rohit expressed his surprise at being at the top of the sixes list, stating that he never thought he would be able to hit that many sixes when he started playing the game. He acknowledged the hard work he has put in over the years and expressed his satisfaction with his achievements so far.

India has had a strong start to their World Cup campaign with two wins out of two matches. They are currently second on the points table, behind New Zealand. However, Rohit emphasized the importance of taking each game as it comes and not looking too far ahead.

He praised the bowlers for their exceptional job in restricting the opposition to under 280 runs in the recent match, considering the good batting conditions. Rohit highlighted the unique format of the World Cup, with nine league games followed by the semi-finals and final, and stressed the team’s focus on approaching each game individually.
